The Concept
Time does not move in straight lines.
It flows, pulses and cycles, much like the unseen networks of mycelium beneath the forest floor.
For a company’s 10th Anniversary Design Contest, we sought to capture this organic motion in a design that breathes.
‘002 | Currents of Time’ is a tribute to evolution and resilience.
Using the natural geometry of tree rings, the pattern whispers the passage of ten years through a form that is both fluid and structured.
When arranged in harmony, the panels reveal the full cross-section of an ancient tree, a poetic homage to nature’s wisdom.
Yet, when shifted and rotated, they dissolve into undulating waves and interconnected currents.
It is a reminder that time does not merely pass; it moves, it adapts and it grows.
What We Delivered
We looked beyond static aesthetics to create a fully adaptable modular system. By redefining the tree ring and breaking it into quarter circles, we developed a 2D vector framework where every panel connects seamlessly in any direction. This allows the design to transition effortlessly from structured circular motifs to expanding, organic flows, mimicking the adaptive nature of mycelium itself and opening up different new design possibilities.
The system spans three scalable formats:
- The Foundation: A square panel that serves as the core building block.
- The Expansion: A rectangular variation to introduce directional currents like wind or water.
- The Tribute: A grand scale panel where the rings converge to form a subtle ‘X’, anchoring the decade-long journey of the design contest organiser.
The Digital Configuration Tool
To truly unlock the potential of this modularity, we built a custom web-based tool.
This digital environment empowers designers to break away from repetition and trust their intuition.
Users can define their grid, rotate individual tiles to discover new rhythms and apply a curated palette of earthy mycelium tones and a newly proposed ‘Obsidian’ contrast.
It is a bridge between biophilic design and digital interaction, proving that complex, generative patterns can be intuitive and accessible.
